After being inspired (or appalled) by some of the crazy items on Regretsy, I decided that a urinal with a yellow gem would definitely be unique. The fire citrine in the base of the urinal was the first gem I purchased after lots of measurements and consulting with John at Moddler.com. I'd been looking at Shapeways, to print thing #6261 from Thingiverse, but I needed a person to walk me through it. John was great about this. He understood my requirements and printed two pieces of slightly different sizes. I made a mold of John's 3D printed urinal and then did some extensive modifications, but largely kept the size and shape. I'm really entertained by how it turned out. It's a size 8 pinky ring. I kinda understand how comedians work after making this ring. At first, it's funny enough to inspire you. Then, you learn everything about it. When you're ready to present it, you can't see what's funny any longer. Your audience reminds you what's funny about it again. 364/365
- [Ring-A-Day: Sparkle and Texture](https://potus31.com/2013/02/ring-day-sparkle-and-texture.html): All right, now take the last three rings, add a gem stone, some millgrain to go with the carved texture, and make it sharp. I turned the culet up on this gem since it seems to be in fashion lately to wear spiky rocks. Culets are supposed to be ground flat and parallel with the table, but this one is quite sharp.

I also added a ridge to soften the ring a bit. The inside of the band was reduced and rounded by carving into the cylindrical geometry as well. Over all, a more organic design.

The ambient temperature was 47F when I turned the kiln on (it's cold at Resistor on the weekends), so I added 20 degrees and an hour to the regular program -- kinda like baking a bigger bird. Well, it looked good out of the charcoal until I hit it with the brass brusher, or maybe I should say the brass crusher. I quenched it when the temperature was around 500F, so that little bit of moisture combined with the bronze powder to make mud in a thin metal shell.

Maybe I'll carve this hieroglyph directly into the brass like the Egyptians might have done.

I began the polishing by filing the imperfections out of the shank. Then when I attempted to round the ring on the mandrel, the shank split. I sawed off the broken parts to solder it back together, but the sawing exposed a hollow section with unsintered bronze powder inside. Then the ring split at the crown. End of ring.

This time it's with silver ArtClay. Unlike BronzClay that has to be fired in an oxygen-free environment (activated carbon) to prevent the copper from inhaling it and becoming cuprous oxide (a.k.a. firescale), this metal clay is .999 (or 99.9% pure silver) so it can be fired in the open kiln on a shelf, or even with a torch. The binder burns away and leaves fine silver to sinter.

I get something similar with sand casting, but even that has sharp edges and fine details. The MetalClay is free to move about the cabin while in the kiln going about its atomic sintering.

Let me know what you think of the rough texture. I'm used to putting a mirror polish on all my work, this craggy organic texture on metal is inspiring and simple.

I stirred in too much for this ring so it doesn't let much light through, but it's a nice subtle depth effect when you hit it.

The epoxy in my hands set up really quickly. If I keep this up, I might set up a peltier cooler to slow down the chemical reaction.
