When I pulled out the proportional divider and measured the drawing, I intended to put 12 stones on this band. So, when the proportional divider landed back on the original dot as I was plotting the gem seats, I didn’t think anything of it. I was surprised to have an extra gem. At first I figured the vendor miscounted and gave me one extra.
It’s a case of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I found this lovely rutilated quartz stone with a deep pavilion. It was too tall to put into a cabochon; most of the rock would be hidden. So, I decided to carve giant prongs and make it a cocktail ring. The girdle is 22mm and the shank is a size 5.5 in Thai Gold.
It’s a big rock!

Like in the museum when they show you a reconstructed image of the artifact when it was new, the black dot is what was preserved of the scarab hieroglyph after lasering. The CerMark doesn’t seem to oxidize brass. Yesterday’s ring was silver, and there was a shadow of a mark on it. Maybe I’ll carve this hieroglyph directly into the brass like the Egyptians might have done.

I was using the lathe and trying to get the ring even while keeping it round, but it kept getting smaller. Yesterday’s was much larger, but oblong. Today’s is nearly perfect, but only a size 5.5. There are still a few tool marks too deep to buff out, but I’m getting the hang of this.

My first lathed brass ring. There’s some tool marks, some unevenness, some things to be learned. Stay tuned. It’s a nice size 11.5 so it fits me. I’d be happy to turn one for you.
